A mechanism for sustained groundwater pressure changes induced by distant earthquakes

چکیده
[1] Large, sustained well water level changes (>10 cm) in response to distant (more than hundreds of kilometers) earthquakes have proven enigmatic for over 30 years. Here we use high sampling rates at a well near Grants Pass, Oregon, to perform the first simultaneous analysis of both the dynamic response of water level and sustained changes, or steps. We observe a factor of 40 increase in the ratio of water level amplitude to seismic wave ground velocity during a sudden coseismic step. On the basis of this observation we propose a new model for coseismic pore pressure steps in which a temporary barrier deposited by groundwater flow is entrained and removed by the more rapid flow induced by the seismic waves. In hydrothermal areas, this mechanism could lead to 4 10 2 MPa pressure changes and triggered seismicity.

Hydrologic responses to earthquakes and a general metric
Hydrologic responses to earthquakes, including liquefaction, changes in stream and spring discharge, changes in the properties of groundwater such as geochemistry, temperature and turbidity, changes in the water level in wells, and the eruption of mud volcanoes, have been documented for thousands of years. Except for some water-level changes in the near field which can be explained by poroelast...

[1] A viscoelastic model is developed to simulate the groundwater level changes in the Cho-Shui River alluvial fan in Taiwan after the Chi-Chi earthquake. An analytical solution is derived with the assumption that no leakage occurred in confined aquifers during the coseismic period. The solution is used to analyze the data collected from a high-density network of hydrologic monitoring wells in ...
متن کاملAbandonment of Minoan palaces on Crete in relation to the earthquake induced changes in groundwater supply
Mysterious abandonment of palaces on Crete during the Late Minoan period was always a challenging problem for archeologists and geologists. Various hypotheses explained this event by effects of tsunamis, earthquakes or climatic changes that were caused by the volcanic eruption of the Santorini volcano. While each of them or their possible combination contributed to the abandonment of palaces an...
متن کاملSeismicity induced by seasonal groundwater recharge at Mt. Hood, Oregon
Groundwater recharge at Mt. Hood, Oregon, is dominated by spring snow melt which provides a natural largeamplitude and narrow-width pore-fluid pressure signal. Time delays between this seasonal groundwater recharge and seismicity triggered by groundwater recharge can thus be used to estimate large-scale hydraulic diffusivities and the state of stress in the crust. We approximate seasonal variat...
متن کاملEarthquakes, volcanoes, and rectified diffusion
Rectified diffusion is a mechanism by which a strain wave can rapidly pump volatiles into a bubble and therefore increase the pressure in a closed syste~. The dynamic strain of either distant regional tectonic earthquakes or local volcanic tremor can be translated to static strain inside a magma chamber via this pro·cess. We formulate a theory appropriate to the conditions of a magma chamber an...
